It feels like months since we've had hummus in the house. Why does the co-op tease us so?!? They already own our hearts and minds. What more do they want in exchange for a tub of their delicious hummus? What more have we to give? How do they expect us to go on hummus-less? My faith is rapidly running, dear roommates, like water through cupped hands. I can't hold out much longer

I just finished ordering phone service for us. I called SBC first, but they required a 2day+ credit check or some crap, so I called AT&T to get service. Here's the ld:
20.25/month for unlimited local
10 cents/minute for local toll and long distance
Our phone number will probably be 217-355-9561. The guy said this could potentially change if the technition has trouble with the number, but that rarely happens.
Service starts on August 17th.
We get a $25 credit on our first bill.
I considered trying to weasle somebody into giving us a free 'trial' month of DSL so we can surf the net till our cable service starts. But the soonest I could get the phone line hooked up was the 17th, and probably it'd take a few days after that to get the DSL line working. So I figured, screw it.
Suppose that's it. Pictures are coming slowly because life keeps interferring with my fun.

Hey, moved-in housemates and housemates about to move in...
So, since you guys will be in the house before me, if you notice a glaring emptiness within our house, let me know and i will work tomorrow or thursday to find something.
like...do we still need a coffee table-type thing? i could probably work on that...
also, do we have a toaster and/or a microwave?
do we have an entertainment stand? do we need one?
lights/lamps/illegal christmas lights?
i will be there...friday friday friday!! Ah, i am so excited!!
I can't wait until i am safe in the warm, comforting bosom of the "I wish I were a park" parking lot. The desolate expanse of cracked pavement says, "HOME" to me like nothing before ever has.
Paula...you still want to volunteer with me at Planned Parenthood across the street? We should tap that ass (uh-huh) once I get down there. yo. Current Mood: bouncy

I had a few things to bring up.
1) no swords, couch, pets, or piano keyboard til I go home again
2) I think I'm going to put a land line in my bedroom only. If other people want to use it, they're gonna have to pay me. I'm not getting long distance on it, only local. My cell phone is just such a piece of crap and doesn't get reception in most buildings. So what good is a phone to me if it never rings?? I dunno, I'm gonna look into it. it's gonna cost me under $25 as I hear it so I'm figuring it's worth it to me. I don't pay for local calls and I actaully recieve the calls people make.
...but there is the fact that I'm getting a new cell phone at some point here...I just don't know when. So maybe my reception will get better and it won't be a problem. grr...decisions.
3) we should get a cheap chorded phone for emergency use cuz we can call 911 with that. if the power dies, so does my chordless phone.
OMG!!! I move in TOMORROW!! ohhhh the excitement.
first, I think I overpacked.
second, I'm way excited.
third, chris and I are going to have such a great time.
fifth, I have my own private room all to my self. ohhh the sanctuary....
sixth, oh hell...there's tons to be happy about!! this is gonna rock!!!!
toast to the new house!!! yippie! Current Mood: excited
Wow, hey. So good news is this:
Gas and electric will be on by tuesday. Water too. We're now going to use cable for internet, because they gave me crazy good deals. That 1 month of cable I was talking about... free. $20/month for the first two months. No installation fee. Free cable modem, so we don't pay rent on one (which is about $10 a month).
The bad news is this: They can't set the cable up till the 20th. seriously. no joke. So... I guess we have to mooch off somebody else.
I called the DSL company, and they would end up having to mail us a crapload of stuff, so that'd probably take a while too. I don't know what else to say. Tomorrow is Tuesday. The 10th. I'm meeting the landlord at 8am to get the keys, and then I move my stuff in. Incredible! Amazing!

Your pirate name is:
Bloody Anne Bonney
Every pirate lives for something different. For some, it's the open sea. For others (the masochists), it's the food. For you, it's definitely the fighting. You can be a little bit unpredictable, but a pirate's life is far from full of certainties, so that fits in pretty well. Arr! http://www.fidius.org/quiz/pirate.php

Ok ok. Ok.
So, let's figure this room stuff out right now. This needs to be cleared.
From what I can gather... Paula, you no longer even care about the portal room, so long as you are far away from Kilannin and her noise? Is that true? Because those two upstairs rooms aren't *that* close. They don't even share a wall. I really don't think that would be an issue.
Kilannin is pretty set on the portal room. It's a matter of... well it's a lot of things that all add up to "Kilannin wants the portal room."
So here, how about this? Since I want the largest room, I'll pay.. say.. $350 per month in rent. The portal room is 2nd largest, so how about the portal room pays $325? The paranoid room is the mediumest, so it'd be $300. The neglected room gets docked to $275 and poor aaron only has to pay $250. Ok? Ok? How is that? Can you stand the neglected room for $275 per month, Paula? How about you KK? Is $325 okay?
Oh, and hey. What the hell is this canada thing? Huh? The most I know about this canada thing is that the 13th is a somehow significant day. I assume you guys are planning some sort of trip to canada, but even that I can't confirm. Is it a road trip? How will you get there? What will you do? How long will you be there? Where in canada will you go?
Also, here's just some news I thought I'd tell you guys about. I think I sent in requests for utilites just in time. Hopefully everything will be set up by the 10th.
Our water account # is 562691, for reference. Our water company is the Illinois-American Water Company.
The reciept for the power order I placed is here
in case you guys need to refer to it for something. The company is Illinois Power
. This also takes care of the gas utility, since it's with the same company. I will probably call the company asap, because the online forms are sometimes shady.
I did call the landlord. Word is that he just meets the first person (probably me, since I live a few blocks away) at the house with the keys, and the I distribute as I see fit. So suck up, or else no key! I told them about the hole in the foundation, and they agreed that our house should not have a hole in it. Remembering our dispute with the landlord about functional appliances, I felt that this was a victory, though I didn't try to get a "No Holes in the House" clause written into the lease. They said they'd check it out when they check over the house. How long till it gets fixed... I have no idea. I'll be sure to point at it when I meet the guy to get the keys, and ask him again about getting it fixed.
Erm, I happen to <3 the olympics, which begin on the 14th. I was discussing this <3 with my friend Kenny the other night, and found that not everybody shares the <3. So I was wondering how you guys felt the games? I've been thinking about getting cable for 1 month, so we can experience their awesome power. I briefly considered stealing cable somehow, but that turned out to be far too difficult and much more illegal than I thought. We could get NBC from the airwaves if we had a TV antenna, but a lot of the events won't be broadcast on NBC. But this has the upside of being free, as opposed to the $43.55 we'd have to pay (not including set-up fees or whatever other crap they have). The broadcast schedule is here
. I can't decide if getting cable (and thus every other channel listed besides NBC) is worth it. NBC has most of the major events (gymnastics, track & field, swimming, etc.) but the others have such winners as table tennis, judo, and (importantly) soccer. The Men's Soccer gold medal match isn't broadcast on NBC (it's on cNBC), though the women's soccer match is. See, thing is, though, they are allowing broadcast of these events via the internet in other countries. And as you know, soccer is a very popular sport in countries that are not the US. So it's very possible that I'd just be able to download the damn game and skip the whole paying deal. But on cable there's archery, sailing, field hockey, fencing, handball... ohhhh. I can't decide. It seems a bit expensive to pay for cable, but the olympics are so much more than gymnastics, track&field and swimming, which is what the NBC coverage always seems to boil down to. And does anybody actually have a TV antenna? Or does anybody have a friend we can mooch cable off of? We'd only have to be friends till the 29th, when the olympics end. But till then we'd have to be pretty great friends, since there are lots of olympics to watch.
Then again, cable means Daily Show for that month...
Of course, if this canada thing is a real thing, it might be moot. What is the canada thing?!
I guess that's it. I have some champaign that we can christen the house with. Heh, actually, it isn't champaign. it's champagne. Anyway, word is that Aaron's coming down on the 11th, so don't kill yourself trying to come down on the 10th. The 'everybody will be there' magic has already been broken. But I'll be there, and so will the house. And, uh, yeah. Rerax :)

The president's address
Just FYI, I've been doing some research into the internet situation. I think our best option is DSL
with SBC-Yahoo. It isn't as fast as cable, but just slightly more than half as much. See, because cable costs around $50 and DSL costs around $27. It's what we use here in Louis' place.
I talked to my relatives in Loda, which is pretty close to Champaign, and they said that if we want to ditch some of the furnished furniture in favor of our own furniture, we can store it with them. And then there's always the storage room that we can fit more than just that couch in.
And if I'm reading the situation right, we'll have no land-line and no cable, right? right?
That's all. Rerax, my friends.
Cue the music
ok, as promised...
Here is the final product of my investigative trip to the house. Enjoy!
I hope you find it useful. Or if not useful, amusing. Amusing not because it's actually funny, but because I put work into something useless like this.

Yay, brian and I went to the house and people were there, so we took pictures and measurements and made conversation with the current residents and so on. I'll put it together in a nice format and post it all once Paula leaves. Uh huh. It'll be awesome... just wait.
Gah. Failure. Paula and I tried again to get into the house. There was a car parked outside this time, but no answer. Hangover? I'll try again later today.
The landlord also isn't answering what I think is his phone. Hangover?

Well, I posted this stuff to my journal, but I suppose I'll put it here too.
I have wireless network cards for you people, so don't go out and buy any. They cost me about $15 a piece if you're considering paying for it. If you don't want to pay for it, that's fine too. Just use it for the year then give it back. I have use for things like these...
Also, don't go out and buy a push reel lawn mower, because I already did. Now we don't need to pay that snot-nosed kid to mow our lawn.
Oh, I'm going to bring down my little fridge. It's actually a pretty large 'little' fridge, but it certainly isn't full size. I believe Paula's also bringing down a mini-fridge. So that, plus mine, plus the house's full size fridge makes for a lot of fridge space. So chances are, we won't need any more fridges.
I also want to bring down my foosball table, but i can't think of anywhere to put it. But foosball's so fun... argh! *whine!*
And still I haven't found a damn table for my bar stools. And I think a coffee table would be useful. If I don't find anything cheap by the end of summer, I'm very seriously considering borrowing my dad's tools for a week or two and just building some furniture. I'd probably make an entertainment stand too, for the TV and whatever else we find entertaining. I've already started browsing furniture retailers, looking at how their various furnitures are constructed. So far, the difficulty seems to go entertainment center < coffee table < dining table so I'd make them in that order. Actually, if I get bored enough I might start making them over the summer. God I'm bored.
Okay, okay, I'm jumping on this community bandwagon for our lovely house. KK, i was going to use the strousehouse journal, but I couldn't sign into it, so I just joined Chris' community.
Chris...it's fantastic that you're cooking--you should post your recipes here so we know what you're making, and we can talk about what sounds good or doesn't sound good.
I was inspired to start cooking today, since my mom gave me free reign to use her credit card to go grocery shopping.
So here are the things I'm thinking about trying to cook (it's all going to be vegetarian for now, though I think I will try cooking with meat eventually because it is a good thing to know how to do, even if it slightly sickens me). One of the wonderful things about India is the vegetarian dishes, so I may start cooking some indian food (starting out with basics like samosas, which i learned how to make there).
Also, I am instituting an afternoon tea time in our house next year...anyone is welcome to join me, and I will make Indian chai and provide biscuits, because the chai isn't complete without some biscuits.
Okay, here is what I am going to make today, or this week, or this month....reports on quality will follow:
-Hummus (then chris and i can have hummus competitions)
-mixed berry smoothie (which can have alcohol added later)
-black bean soup
-Dal (i play around with various kinds...it's essentially lentil soup, but spicier since it's indian)
-French toast with warm apple compote
-noodles in a sesame-peanut-soy sauce (i've already made this before, and it's really, really good)
-lasagna (with no meat)
-cornbread (hoping to recreate red herring's cornbread)
so yeah, those are the things I'm going to start with, I think.

Hi guys. I made this community so we can post all the crap we acquire for the house, so we don't end up with duplicates. Or just to organize stuff. Or whatever, dig?
actually, forget it. just post house related crap. If later I feel like showing what an enormous dork I am, I'll go ahead and post the stuff I'm bringing. But really it doesn't matter, since most things we could probably use two or three of anyway. One thing I will say here is that I will probably keep my van down here in the fall, though I doubt I'll be able to get parking close to the house. I'm planning on parking (for free) at the Champaign bus terminal, which is probably 4 or 5 blocks away. or more. So it'll be sort-of a bike/rollerblade/something to the car type deal. If you (paula and jess specifically) are willing to make the hike out there, you can use my car next year whenever.
